58 to go

03.19.2008
I just wanted to give a quick update from yesterday's flog. Maybe it's because I have been listening to water pour into my basement all day, maybe it's because I wanted to walk out to the road and get splashed by a truck, or maybe it's just because I'm wearing leg warmers (okay, that one's not true), but, whatever the reason, I mailed 2 handwritten notes today on my new pretty stationery. I'm bringing back snail mail one lousy letter at a time.
Yes, it's another letter from Amy

Stationery at Superdeluxe
I must admit that I have a new addiction. It's not that I'm proud of it or anything. I just can't help it. There was a time (from the beginning of college until kids arrived) that I consciously tried to be very good about sending letters and quick little notes. However, life as I knew it coincided with this easy and speedy thing called e-mail that more and more people were using. I've never really been one to enjoy long phone conversations, but letters, quick notes and thank yous have always been something I enjoyed. I love getting a pretty note card in the mail, not that it happens all that often anymore. I used to even make creative and fun cards (in the pre-scrapbooking era). This brings me to my latest addiction. I can't stop purchasing personalized note cards and thank you cards! I just returned from Target a few minutes ago, where I purchased FIVE, yes count 'em five, packages of beautiful cards. What ever will I do with SIXTY note and thank you cards? I will admit that I particularly like when they are on clearance (which, these all were-$4.90 for all 60 cards, thank you), so it's not like I'm spending my life savings on them. But still, what will I do with these? I hardly send out note cards any more, but I am trying to change that and maybe I can bring back the lost art of handwriting a letter. Geez, leg warmers came back, for goodness' sake--letters can surely do it. Add these 60 to the probably 100 I have here already that I've collected since last year and I think I might officially be considered a hoarder, not to mention a fire hazard. If you want a nice personalized letter from me, please send me an email and I will gladly respond by snail mail if you request it. The cards are all so pretty, I hate to waste them sitting here in my desk! Plus, if I send them out I will have a reason to purchase more again next week. The site included here, Superdeluxe, is one I just love browsing for stationery and design inspiration. I apologize if the site gets pulled--I think they are creating a new one, but make sure you look at the great "monogram pattern" page to see all the great patterns made with letters. They're superdeluxe!
Voting in the storm

Polling Place Photo Project
As promised, here are some photos of my polling place from Tuesday's primary election. We always wait and vote in the evening when we can go as a family--the kids have gone along since day one. This year, I do wish it had been earlier in the day when the weather had been more appealing. We were all pounded by ice chunks as we made it from the car into the church and back to the car again! This time my son got to help in the process; he is learning to read he followed along on the ballot. Plus, the kind folks at our polling place let him scan our ballots. It is fun to look on the Photo Project website and see some of the places people vote. I love the suburban garage in California; now that is democracy to the utmost local level!

It's bad enough that I'm a news junkie and all the news consumption lately is politics, politics, politics. Add to that the tickets I scored to the hottest show in Ohio--tonight's Democratic Debate at Cleveland State University and I have very little else on the brain. I have actually been trying for weeks to find some great resources on ballot design (a subject I personally find fascinating), however there just isn't much out there. Today I will share some political involvement of the American Institute of Graphic Arts. They actually have actually published a book about ballot and election information design, so until I get that book and can tell you about that here, I will give you their description of the project. The other creatively interesting political tidbit I found is the Polling Place Photo Project, sponsored by the AIGA and The New York Times. This project encourages the "citizen journalists" of America to photograph every polling place during the primary and general elections this year. It is really interesting to see how and where people vote all over the country, and I encourage all my readers to take photos of their polling spots and submit them to the project and email them to me!
And coming soon...

Wow, was my last faux blog actually on February 5? That seems so long ago. This entry is an apology for taking so long to bring you more creative inspiration. I am actually spending my free time (not that there is much of it these days) working on a whole new web site for aha creative that will appear soon on an internet near you. This has prevented me from spending as much time as I would enjoy to find you new, kooky, interesting and inspirational things to see. I promise you I will post in the next few days--I am setting aside some time to find something for all of you, since I know you have missed me on here. Tune back in soon...
