All the cool kids are doing it...

The Cool Hunter
Happy New Year to everyone!
I wanted to end my 2007 entries with some sort of interesting "design retrospective" and The Cool Hunter was the first thing I thought of. There is so much on this site, I could barely touch the tip of the iceberg here, but it is a great way to look back and see some interesting sights from 2007. There is everything from a wild re-design of a children's playground, the funky Googleplex and all the way to my personal favorite, the machine gun handbag (it was on my Christmas list this year, but apparently no one wanted to make that statement by giving that as a gift!) Sign up for the email newsletter and you won't miss a single design trend in 2008!
Holiday photo fun

Graphita
As someone who attempts to make a living using expensive, fancy design software and high-tech skills, the thought of just anyone being able to "design" things is sometimes scary. However, I do enjoy it when a website comes along that makes it easy enough (but not too easy) for the average computer user to create fun and inventive things. This site is a recommendation from a friend of mine who does fabulous things with her photos online and always amazes me. I just tried Graphita tonight and it is a blast! I have been looking for a fun suggestion for all those holiday-gift-opening photos you will most likely take in the next week and this is it. You can upload your own photos (or actually even use some fun sample photos they provide) and then do all kinds of silly things, like add captions, objects (a pie in the face, for example), doodles, bubbles and words to your photos. You can save these high resolution images and do what you like with them--make prints, photo gifts, upload them to your website, whatever! I know I will have some already humorous photos after Christmas at my house, so this will be a great stress break next week!
How designers see humor--it's not pretty

Make My Logo Bigger Cream
Well, it is time for me to share a little bit of dark designer satire on this cold and dreary Monday. This is a riot, if only to me alone. Any of you who have spoken to me about design will know my "less is more" belief. This is entertaining. Make sure you watch it long enough to see "The Emotionator"--it's my favorite.
Window shopping at its finest
12.12.2007
1st Dibs
1st Dibs is a huge site that features antiques and vintage design items for sale all over the world. You can shop by specific designers, cities, etc. There are so many amazing pieces on here and really a lot to see. I was attempting to find some way to tie the holidays into my faux-blog, and I finally have with 1st Dibs! Make sure you click on the page for the New York Holiday Windows. These photos show (of course never as good as I am sure they look in person) the spectacle of holiday window decorations for this year. There are some interesting and timely themes for holiday gift giving here, and some beautiful use of color and light. (I love the facade at Saks.)
Now this is designer-approved camping

Design Within Reach
This website is further proof that we live within design every day. Design Within Reach takes even the most mundane things (like staplers and mailboxes) and turns them into beautiful, functional beings. Check out the "Tools for Living" section to see some of the most basic everyday things in gorgeous new designs, and don't miss the DWR Airstream Trailer. That is how I'd like to camp.
Exclusive to the max

20ltd
Design pervades so many aspects of life, and this site is the perfect showcase of the top tier. 20ltd offers 20 specially designed, limited-in-number pieces for sale--ranging from jewelry and fashion to motorcycles and everything in between. It is amazing to think about the form, function and aesthetics of all these exclusive pieces. 20ltd also offers an exhibit of a photographer's work and a selection of 20 songs to enjoy. This is a luxury feast.
What is your birth color?
12.04.2007
Colorstrology
With the Colorstrology website you can find your birth color. This is like the astrology of color. It is definitely interesting to read. "Your birth carries a numerological vibration that has a very specific value and meaning. Each of the components involved corresponds to a particular color and, in turn, creates a palette from which you can draw." My birth color is Lettuce Green, 13-0324 (Imaginative, Emotional, Discriminating)
Candy, candy everywhere

Dylan's Candy Bar
Let me just say that I love this logo. I had the pleasure of being at the grand opening of the East Hampton, NY, store this summer and was lucky enough to meet the owner Dylan Lauren and her entire family (you may know her father, Ralph Lauren). This shop was an absolute feast for the eyes and sweet tooth. I purchased a coffee mug that I use right here at my desk most days becuase I just loved the simplicity and sweetness of her logo and all the bright, fun colors she uses in her designs and in the stores.
